Glastonbury Mendip IPRU

The IPRU (Integrated Pupil Referral Unit) provides a teaching facility maintained by Somerset County Council which is specifically organised to provide education for children who are excluded, sick, or otherwise unable to attend a mainstream or special maintained school.

National Design Consultancy (NDC) were appointed by Midas Construction who were employed as Building Engineering Services, Sub Consultants, working alongside NVB Architects undertook the full M&E design services form RIBA Stage 2 through to completion of this state-of-the-art teaching facility in the heart of Somerset for Somerset County Council.

Very often such pupils are described as displaying EBD – Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, therefore the primary focus of the IPRU design was to provide an informal and relaxed teaching atmosphere, different to that found in a typical school environment. A series of teaching spaces were provided for small learning groups in contrast to typical large classes. Also break out spaces containing full domestic kitchen facilities were provided throughout for use by the pupils to allow them to prepare their own meals to assist in development of their independence and ‘life skills’.

The Building Engineering Services comprised a low carbon design, incorporating underfloor heating and natural ventilation alongside LED lighting with full automated Dali control & dimmable daylight linking to minimise operational energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

Dynamic simulation modelling was used to verify the natural ventilation strategy, prove building regulations compliance and provide the energy performance certificate on completion.

The Mechanical & Electrical Services design included provision of incoming services, new transformer, primary services distribution, general small power, ICT network, fire alarm system, access control & building security system, domestic water services, above ground drainage and external lighting to landscape and carpark areas.
